Local vertical mesh refinements are implemented in SPRING using the Mesh 3D Divide layer… menu item. The data for the new nodes and elements are generated automatically (as with horizontal mesh refinement).

After calling up the menu item, an input window appears in which you first decide which method is to be used for the division:
